Statement: Alloa Campus

This news is deeply concerning. Local access to further education is essential for young people, working adults, and families across Clackmannanshire.

When the merger that created Forth Valley College was agreed, there was an ‘absolute commitment’ to maintain a strong presence in Alloa – and I firmly believe that must continue if we are to meet the area’s current and future needs.

I opposed the original merger of Alloa College precisely because I feared this situation could arise. The risk of losing local provision is exactly what I argued against at the time.

With Clackmannanshire’s population growing, the economic impact of the Grangemouth closure, and already limited public transport links, reducing provision here would be a major setback for the area and risk undermining opportunities for local people to develop skills and improve their prospects.

I have raised this matter with both the Minister for Higher and Further Education and the Cabinet Secretary for Education, and I have another meeting lined up to press the case once again. I have also met with the Principal of Forth Valley College and directly challenged why Alloa is being singled out. I am awaiting a meeting with the Chair of the College Board.

I recognise the stress and anxiety this uncertainty is causing for staff, students, and families. That is why I am disappointed to see some trying to turn this serious issue into a party-political row. What matters here is not point-scoring, but securing the best outcome for Clackmannanshire.

I stand ready to work with all partners to find a sustainable solution that safeguards jobs and secures the future of further education in Alloa. I would also encourage local people to get in touch with me to share their views and show their support for protecting the campus – every voice will help strengthen the case for keeping further education in our community.”
