With the SNP scrapping peak rail fares on ScotRail services with effect from the start of September, Keith Brown MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Clackmannanshire & Dunblane, has highlighted the savings this could mean over £2000 per year for some commuters in his constituency.
Speaking this afternoon, Keith said:
“The cost of living is at the top of everyone’s minds – and the SNP has taken action by lowering the cost of a train journey for everyone in Scotland. Making train fares cheaper for commuters is good for people’s pockets and will be good for the environment if it attracts others to leave the car at home and let the train take the strain.
“The change is part of a package of measures implemented by the SNP Scottish Government designed to support Scots with the cost of living and to help encourage more sustainable transport and will benefit many residents of my Clackmannanshire & Dunblane constituency.
“Scrapping peak rail fares will save local commuters a considerable sum of money – for those travelling from Alloa, Bridge of Allan or Dunblane to Glasgow or Edinburgh every working day of the year, it could be from over £1700 to over £2,000 a year.
“The ability of the Scottish Government to end peak fares was only possible because the SNP brought ScotRail back into public ownership in 2022 – showing, once again, that where we have the powers, we’ve taken action to help make Scots’ lives better. But, with devolution, we can only address the symptoms – with independence. we could address the root causes.”
