I was pleased to lodge a motion in the Scottish Parliament marking the 400th anniversary of the Baronetcy of Nova Scotia – and recognising the unique role that the village of Menstrie continues to play in the story of Scotland-Canada relations.
Sir William Alexander of Menstrie was instrumental in the establishment of Nova Scotia, and his legacy is still reflected in the province’s name, flag and even the Canadian Coast Guard ship that bears his name.
Menstrie Castle remains a focal point of this remarkable history – with its permanent exhibition and newly unveiled plaque connecting our Wee County to a lasting symbol of Scotland’s global influence.
The anniversary was marked through a conference at the University of Stirling – bringing together scholars from both sides of the Atlantic to explore our shared cultural legacy.
