Private George Alister Walker Ewan to be Added to Dollar War Memorial

Keith Brown MSP, Member of Parliament for Clackmannanshire & Dunblane, has welcomed the decision by Clackmannanshire Council to add the name of Private George Alister Walker Ewan to the Dollar War Memorial, ensuring that his sacrifice is properly commemorated in his hometown.

Private Ewan, who served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was killed in action in Italy in June 1944. For decades, his final resting place remained unidentified, and he was buried as an unknown soldier. However, thanks to extensive research and efforts from the Ministry of Defence’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), his identity was confirmed, and his grave was rededicated with full military honours last year.

Following correspondence between the office of Keith Brown MSP, Clackmannanshire Council, and the Ministry of Defence, the council has now confirmed that Private Ewan’s name will be added to the Dollar War Memorial. A ceremony will be held to mark this occasion.

Commenting, Keith said:

“I am delighted that Private George Alister Walker Ewan will now have his name inscribed on the Dollar War Memorial, ensuring that his bravery and sacrifice are properly honoured within his local community.

“This recognition is long overdue, and I pay tribute to all those involved in the research and advocacy that led to his identification and rededication. Now, with his name on the memorial, future generations in Dollar and the wider constituency will have the opportunity to reflect on his service.

“I would like to thank Clackmannanshire Council, and particularly Provost Donald Balsillie, for their commitment to this. I look forward to the upcoming ceremony where we can all pay tribute to Private Ewan’s memory.

“This is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many, and I hope this serves as a lasting tribute to Private Ewan’s courage and dedication.”
