Keith Brown MSP again raises Cornton Vale noise complaints in Parliament

LOCAL MSP DEMANDS AN UPDATE ON THE SCOTTISH PRISON SERVICE’S PLAN TO PROTECT RESIDENTS

Further to an initial question last November, Clackmannanshire and Dunblane MSP Keith Brown has again raised the ongoing issue of noise coming from Cornton Vale prison (HMP & YOI Stirling) with the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Justice.

Since last summer, the houses surrounding the facility have reported how inmates’ noisemaking is negatively impacting their lives – including screaming, swearing, shouting, fighting, and singing at all hours of the day and night.

On Wednesday, 15th May, Mr. Brown asked the Cabinet Secretary for a further update on the Scottish Prison Service’s work to address reported noise disturbance at HMP Stirling.

In her response, the Cabinet Secretary stated that the issue is primarily an operational matter for SPS, and she will continue to raise it with their chief executive, pushing them to act.

Mr. Brown has committed to continue to pursue this issue on behalf of his constituents – and will meet with the Scottish Prison Service shortly to discuss the matter with them directly.

SNP MSP for Clackmannanshire and Dunblane, Keith Brown, said:

“For almost a year now I have been pursuing this case on behalf of my constituents.”

“I’m in regular contact with the Scottish Prison Service, and regularly make representations to the Cabinet Secretary for Justice.”

“Despite assurances from SPS, my constituents continue to report there has been little improvement to the disruption they have been suffering for almost a year now.”

“While my constituents are asked to be patient and consider the well-being of the inmates, there appears to be little consideration given to the impact of the situation on the constituents, and their families.”

“I will continue to exhaust all options to ensure that SPS takes the necessary action to resolve this problem for those living near Cornton Vale.”
