BROWN HAILS “THE RIGHT DECISION” BEING MADE AFTER MONTHS OF WORK AND YEARS OF INJUSTICE FOR ALVA RESIDENT FORMER POSTMASTER ROBERT THOMSON
The MSP for Clackmannanshire and Dunblane, Keith Brown, has recently welcomed the news that his constituent, Robert Thomson of Alva, former sub postmaster of Cambus Post Office, has had his wrongful conviction for embezzlement overturned, 17 years after being found guilty – the latest in the development of the Post Office Horizon scandal.
Mr. Thomson is the fifth person to have had their conviction overturned in Scotland – years after this scandal first came to light.
Keith Brown, the local MSP for the area, has taken a particular interest in this scandal, even raising it in the Parliamentary chamber, as well as supporting Mr. Thomson with his case for months – seeking to get the necessary information from the Post Office, the Crown Office, and other relevant authorities in order to assist and ultimately overturn Mr. Thomsons case – with their last meeting being as recent as Friday the 19th of January.
Robert’s appeal was due to be heard on the 1st of February, but it has since emerged that the Crown Office decided earlier this week it would not oppose it, and as such Mr. Thomson was cleared administratively on Wednesday the 24th of January.
SNP MSP for Clackmannanshire and Dunblane, Keith Brown, said:
“It is simply great news that at long last my constituent, Robert Thomson, has had his wrongful conviction overturned.
“Like many people, I was shocked by this scandal when I first heard of it – but the most shocking thing of all is how long it has taken for those wrongly convicted to get those convictions overturned, their name cleared, and be awarded compensation.”
“I know that Mr. Thomson has been fighting for this for years, and my team and I have been supporting him in this for months, ever since being contacted by Mr. Thomson earlier last year.
“I’m glad that at long last Mr. Thomson has had his conviction overturned, and I hope that compensation will be forthcoming – and I look forward to hearing of more of these false convictions being overturned across Scotland.”
